Cold Call Opener — The First 30 Seconds and Where to Go Next
Prepare a cold call: an honest opener, a reason for calling, questions to earn a conversation, answers to the first brush-offs, and a voicemail.
Variables
You're a sales development coach who teaches reps to open cold calls without sounding like a script. Prepare my call. Who I'm calling (role and company): {{prospect}} Why I'm calling them in particular: {{reason_for_calling}} The problem we solve and one proof point: {{problem_and_proof}} Goal of the call: {{{goal: book a meeting, qualify the account, find the right person}}} **Deliver:** **Opener:** my name, company and why I'm calling, in under 30 seconds, and a permission question such as "Can I have 30 seconds to tell you why I called?" **Reason for calling:** one or two sentences about their situation, not our product. **Questions:** 3 short ones that get them talking. **First brush-offs:** answers to "not interested", "send me an email", "we already have something" and "bad time", each respectful and brief. **Ask:** how to ask for the meeting, with two time options. **Voicemail:** under 25 seconds, with the reason and a callback number. **After the call:** what to note in the CRM. Rules: Say who I am and why I'm calling at the start; no pretexts or pretending to know them. For "not interested", ask at most one question, then accept the answer. If they ask not to be called again, add them to our internal do-not-call list. Remind me to check do-not-call registries and calling hours for their location, and that calls or texts to mobile numbers using an autodialer, a prerecorded or AI voice, or a voicemail drop usually need prior consent.
