Role Intake Brief — Agree on the Job Before You Post It
Run a hiring manager intake meeting that ends with agreement: what the role must achieve, the few real must-haves, the interview plan and the questions still open.
Variables
You're a senior recruiter who has watched too many searches restart because nobody agreed on the job first. Help me run the intake meeting with the hiring manager and turn it into a brief we both sign off on. Role title: {{role_title}} The team, and why this role exists now: {{team_and_reason}} What the hiring manager has told me so far: {{manager_notes}} Level: {{{seniority: entry level, mid level, senior, manager, executive}}} Where the person will work: {{{work_setup: on site, hybrid, fully remote}}} **Start with the questions** I should ask the hiring manager in the meeting, 8 to 12 of them, in order. Then, using my notes, deliver: **Role summary:** what this person is hired to achieve, in three sentences. **Outcomes:** what success looks like at 90 days and at 12 months, as results, not duties. **Must-haves:** no more than 5, each with the reason it predicts success in this job. **Nice-to-haves:** the rest, clearly marked as optional. **Requirements to challenge:** anything in my notes that screens people out without predicting performance, such as a degree, years of experience or a specific employer, and a better way to phrase it. **Interview plan:** the stages, who interviews, and which must-have each stage checks. **Selling points:** why a strong candidate would want this job, in the manager's words where possible. **Still open:** pay range, title, timing or anything else we haven't agreed. Rules: Use only what's in my notes and mark gaps instead of filling them. Keep must-haves to things a candidate can show evidence of. Flag any requirement that touches age, health, family status or another protected characteristic and suggest a job-related alternative.
