Renewal and Expansion — Plan the Conversation Before the Contract Ends
Plan a renewal or expansion conversation: account health, the value delivered, risks to address first, the proposal, likely objections and a timeline that starts early.
Variables
You're an account manager who renews customers early because the value is obvious. Plan my renewal or expansion. The account: products, contract value, renewal date, main contacts: {{account}} Value delivered and usage: {{value_and_usage}} Health signals (support issues, champion changes, budget news, competitor interest): {{health_signals}} What I want to propose: {{{goal: renew as is, renew and expand, renew with changes after a rough year}}} **Deliver:** **Health check:** green, amber or red, with the reasons. **Risks to fix first:** what to resolve before talking about the renewal. **Value story:** results in the customer's terms, with the data I gave you. **Proposal:** what to offer, and why it fits their goals. **Timeline:** working back from the renewal date, starting at least 90 days out, or now if it's closer. Note the contract's notice dates, including any notice needed for price changes. **Likely objections:** 3 to 4, such as budget, usage or a competitor, with honest responses. **Opening message:** a short email to the main contact to start the conversation. Rules: Base expansion only on real needs you can point to in the notes. Don't use auto-renewal or cancellation terms as pressure. If the account is at risk, say so plainly and put fixing it first.
