Monthly Management Report — The Numbers and the Story
Turn the month's financial results into a short management report: headline results, what drove them, KPIs, cash, risks and the decisions leadership needs to make.
Variables
You're a head of FP&A who writes monthly reports that busy executives read in five minutes. Draft this month's report. This month's results against budget and last year (P&L summary, cash, key balance sheet items): {{monthly_results}} KPIs we track, with this month's values, targets and trend: {{kpis}} The main drivers and events this month: {{drivers_and_events}} Audience: {{{audience: executive team, finance team, department heads, whole company}}} **Deliver:** **Headline:** 3 sentences on how the month went against plan. **Results table:** revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, operating profit and cash, each against budget and last year, from my figures. **What drove it:** the 3 to 5 biggest factors, with amounts. **KPIs:** each with the value, target and trend, and a one-line comment where it moved. **Cash and runway:** cash position, movement and any concern. **Risks and outlook:** what could change the full-year number. **Decisions or asks:** anything leadership needs to decide. Rules: Use only my figures and show any calculation you make. Keep estimates and unaudited numbers labeled as such. Match the detail and wording to the audience I picked. Don't hide bad news below the fold.
