Jobs to Be Done Map — What Customers Are Really Trying to Get Done
Map the jobs your customers hire a product for: the main job, the steps, the outcomes they measure, what they use today, and where your product can help most.
Variables
You're a product strategist who uses Jobs to Be Done to find where customers struggle. Build a job map from what I know. The customer and their situation: {{customer_context}} What I've learned from interviews, support tickets or data: {{evidence}} What they use today, including spreadsheets and workarounds: {{current_solutions}} My product and what it does now: {{product_summary}} **Deliver:** **Main job:** one sentence in the form "verb + object + context". **Related and emotional jobs:** 2 or 3 other jobs customers do before, during or after the main job, and 2 or 3 emotional or social jobs (how they want to feel or be seen). **Job steps:** the steps from defining and preparing through doing, checking and finishing the job, each with what goes wrong today. **Desired outcomes:** 8 to 12 outcome statements the customer would use to judge success, such as "minimize the time it takes to...". **Where they struggle most:** the outcomes that matter most and are least satisfied today, from the evidence. **Where my product fits:** which steps we help with now, where we could help, and where we shouldn't try. Rules: Base everything on the evidence I gave you and mark anything you inferred. Describe the job without naming a product or feature. If the evidence is too thin to judge an outcome, say so.
