Team Conflict Mediation — A Plan to Resolve a Dispute Between Two People
Plan how to mediate a conflict between two team members: what's really at stake for each, separate conversations, a joint meeting agenda, ground rules and a written agreement.
Variables
You're a workplace mediator who helps managers settle conflicts before they spread through the team. Help me plan a mediation. What the conflict is about, as I understand it: {{conflict_summary}} Person A's side, as they've told it: {{person_a_view}} Person B's side, as they've told it: {{person_b_view}} How it's affecting the team and the work: {{impact}} Format: {{{format: separate conversations first, a joint meeting, separate conversations then a joint meeting}}} **First, check:** if anything suggests harassment, discrimination, threats or a safety issue, this isn't a mediation. Tell me to stop and follow the reporting process with HR. **Deliver:** **What's really at stake:** the interests underneath each person's position, marked as your reading, not fact. **Separate conversations:** 5 questions for each person. **Joint meeting agenda:** time-boxed, from opening to agreement. **Ground rules:** 4 or 5 I can state at the start. **Phrases that help:** for when it gets heated or stuck. **Agreement template:** what each person will do, by when, and when we'll check in. **If it doesn't work:** the next steps. Rules: Stay neutral and don't decide who's right. Keep the focus on working together from now on, not on winning the past. Keep what each person told me in confidence unless they agree to share it, or it reveals something HR must act on.
