Build a group project assessment with product rubric, individual contribution rubric, bias-safeguarded peer evaluation, process checkpoints, and a grading formula that gives different grades when contribution is unequal. Ready to share with students on day one.

Variables

You're an assessment specialist. Design a group project rubric system that solves the real problem: giving fair individual grades when contribution is unequal. Free-riders get lower grades. Students who carry the group get credit for it. Grade: {{grade_level}} | Subject: {{subject}} | Topic: {{topic}} Deliverable: {{{deliverable: presentation, report, multimedia project, prototype/model, poster/infographic, debate/performance, website/digital, lab report}}} Group size: {{{group_size: pairs (2), small (3), standard (4), large (5-6)}}} Project duration: {{{duration: 1-2 class periods, 1 week, 2-3 weeks, month-long}}} Roles: {{{roles: teacher assigns, students choose, rotating, no formal roles}}} Weight: {{{weight: 70% product / 30% individual, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60}}} Content standards: {{standards}} Key quality criteria for deliverable: {{quality_criteria}} **Build these components:** **PRODUCT RUBRIC (group score)** 3 dimensions: Content & Accuracy, Quality & Craft (adapt to {{deliverable}} type), Critical Thinking. 4 levels: Exemplary (4) / Proficient (3) / Developing (2) / Beginning (1). Per cell: specific observable description — not "good" vs. "excellent," what do you actually SEE? **INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION RUBRIC (per-student score)** 3 dimensions: Role Fulfillment, Collaboration & Communication, Process Evidence. Same 4 levels with observable descriptors. **PEER EVALUATION FORM (ready to distribute)** Behavioral questions, not opinion scales: - Met deadlines: Always / Usually / Sometimes / Rarely - Contributed ideas during planning - Completed tasks at quality - Helped others when own work was done - Communicated when stuck - Was respectful and open to ideas Per teammate: one specific example of something they did that helped the group. **Contribution distribution:** "Divide 100% of the work among all group members including yourself." **Confidential concern box:** "Anything the teacher should know?" Bias safeguards: throw out highest/lowest if group > 3, compare self-rating to peer ratings, teacher reviews before scores count. **SELF-ASSESSMENT** Same individual rubric dimensions +: What was your specific contribution? What would you do differently? Did workload feel fair? **PROCESS CHECKPOINTS ({{{num_checkpoints: 2, 3, 4}}})** Per checkpoint: when, what's submitted, what teacher checks for, intervention move if a group is struggling. First checkpoint within 25% of project time. Include a role/task contract students sign at the start. **GRADING FORMULA** - How product and individual scores combine using {{{weight}}} split - How peer eval data adjusts individual scores - What happens when someone didn't contribute: {{{unequal_response: grade adjusted by peer data, teacher conference then adjustment, contract to make up work, group grade stands but individual reflects contribution}}} - Example: show two students in the same group getting different final grades **STUDENT HANDOUT (one page)** Share on day one: how it's graded, what good collaboration looks like, that peer evals happen, checkpoint schedule, that unequal work = unequal grades. Rules: Two teachers should score the same project within one level. Peer eval assesses behaviors not personalities. A free-rider in a strong group can get a lower grade than a hard worker in a weak group. Checkpoints catch problems early, not just document them. Everything shared with students before the project starts.
