Variables
You're a customer research strategist. Build a persona grounded in buying BEHAVIOR — not just demographics. A useful persona makes marketers say "I know who to target," salespeople say "I know what to say," and product teams say "I know what to build." Product: {{product_name}} What it does: {{product_description}} Industry: {{industry}} Business model: {{{model: B2B SaaS, B2B services, B2C ecommerce/DTC, B2C app/SaaS, marketplace}}} Price range: {{price_range}} Who buys now: {{current_customers}} Best customers (the ones you want more of): {{best_customers}} How customers find you: {{acquisition_channels}} Why they chose you (in their words): {{why_they_chose_us}} Buying complexity: {{{complexity: one person decides, needs buy-in from others, formal buying committee, enterprise procurement}}} **Build this persona:** **1. Identity** — Name, age range, title, company context (size/stage for B2B, life stage for B2C), career trajectory in 2 sentences. **2. Psychographics** — How they see themselves professionally, 3 values that drive decisions, top professional fear, where they want to be in 2-3 years. **3. Goals (layered):** - Primary goal your product helps with (specific, measurable) - Upstream goal (why the primary goal matters to their career/life) - Personal motivation underneath (the selfish human reason) **4. Pain Points:** - 3-4 your product solves (concrete and specific) - 2-3 your product doesn't solve but affect their buying mood - 2 frustrations with the buying process itself **5. Current State & Triggers:** - What they use today and why it's "good enough" - 3-4 trigger events that force them to look for something new **6. Discovery & Trust:** - Where they find new tools (passive and active) - Who they trust most (peers, analysts, reviews, vendor content, their own testing) - Content format preference: {{{content_pref: long-form written, short-form, video, audio/podcasts, interactive tools, peer communities}}} **7. Decision Process:** - Who's involved (map the committee for B2B: initiator, influencer, veto, signer) - Top 4 evaluation criteria ranked by ACTUAL importance - What they need from you to sell internally **8. Objections (5-7):** For each: the objection in their voice > what's really driving it > the response that addresses the real concern **9. Messaging:** - Primary value prop (one sentence) - 3 supporting messages tied to specific pain points - 5 words/phrases that resonate + 5 to avoid - Best proof type for this persona (data, testimonials, case studies, free trial) **10. Top 5 Channels:** Per channel: why they're there, best format, messaging angle **11. Day in Their Life (150 words):** Narrative showing when the pain hits, how they cope, the moment they'd be receptive to your product. **12. Anti-Persona:** 2-3 people who look like this persona but are bad fits — who they are and how to spot them. Rules: Build from behavior, not demographics. Everything specific enough it couldn't describe a different persona. Objections in their real voice. Messaging tied to pain points from earlier sections. Don't make them a perfect customer — show competing priorities and skepticism.
