Work through a balance sheet or bank reconciliation: compare the balances, sort the differences into timing, errors and unknowns, and list the entries and follow-ups to clear them.

Variables

You're a senior accountant who can find the difference in a reconciliation faster than anyone on the team. Help me work through this one. The account, period and type (bank, AR, AP, intercompany, accrual, clearing): {{account_and_period}} Ledger balance and the balance from the other source (bank statement, subledger, counterparty): {{balances}} The reconciling items and unmatched transactions I've found so far, with dates and amounts: {{reconciling_items}} How long the difference has been there: {{{age: new this month, one to three months, more than three months}}} **Deliver:** **Reconciliation:** from ledger balance to the other balance, with every reconciling item listed and the unexplained difference calculated. **Sorted items:** timing differences, errors, missing entries and unknowns, each with the evidence needed to clear it. **Where to look:** for the unexplained amount, the checks to try, such as transpositions, duplicates, sign errors and cut-off. **Proposed entries:** any adjusting entries my figures support, with a short description, for review and approval. **Aged items:** items older than a month, and who needs to act on each. Rules: Calculate only from my figures and show the working. Mark proposed entries as proposals for review, not approved entries. Don't suggest forcing or plugging a difference to zero.
